Discover Sumilon Island

It took about four years to develop Sumilon island into a beautiful resort where it remains as one of the Cebu’s best kept secrets. Sumilon means to take refuge.

The island was leased by the government to Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort, a member of the Almont Holdings, Inc. owned by Julie Alegrado-Vergara.

Located on the sourtheastern tip of Cebu, the 24-hectare island is a marine santuarty with pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear water.

Local and foreign tourists frequent the island resort and enjoy the amenities and facilities it offers.

White sand beaches are found in different areas of the island. A beautiful white sandbar is well known for its changing shapes and around the island, depending on the season and tide.

Before it was developed by Almont Holdings, Inc., the island had no source of water. A roll-on roll-off vessel has to supply the resort with water and other provisions daily.

The main office of the resort is located at the Bato, Oslob town where you take a 15-minute trip on a ferry to the island.

Another interesting spot of the island is a natural lagoon surrounded by mangroves where you enjoy a paddle boat ride and a kawak.

The resort has 12 cottages and each with two adjoining rooms with private verandas that offer panoramic views of the sea, cove and mainland Cebu. Each airconditioned room can accommodate three guests and has a private toilet and shower, a mini bar, a writing desk and dresser and a ceiling fan.

From the cottages, you could go up to the pavilion which houses the resort restaurant that serves local and international cuisine.

Also located in the pavilion are the reception desk, library, giftshop and bar. The infinity freshwater pool is located near the pavilion.

For those who love water sports, the resort’s dive shop is fully equipped with snorkeling and diving gears, paddle boats, windsurfing boards, and kayaks. Guests could also go on a simple line and hook fishing near the island.

Sumilon island is designated as an official marine sanctuary with its superb visibility, stunning reefs and abundance of varied tropical marine species that provide an ideal and memorable dive.

There are four major dive sites around the island. These are the Garden Eel Plaza, Nikki’s Wall, Coral Landscape and Julie’s Rock. During dives, one could find varied marine species.

You can enjoy swimming in the warm and shallow waters or take a boat ride around the island.

For those interested in trekking, there are trails that offer hikers plenty of opportunities to wander on the island.

One can walk along the tree park, see the historical watchtower and the lighthouse, peek into mysterious caves and observe the local flora and fauna.

How to get there. To reach the island, one must either travel via Dumaguete City or Cebu city by an hour flight from Manila.

The shortest route is via Dumaguete City because it is closest to the island. The three-hour land trip to Oslob from Cebu City is a scenic ride through the southern coastal towns with fantastic views of the ocean.

From Oslob, the resort can arrange pumpboats or small fastcrafts to bring guests to Sumilon island. If the waters are very rough and the weather condition does not allow travel via pumpboat, the resort can arrange ferry rides from the port of Bato, Oslob to the island.—Edu Lopez

  1. how much is spent in getting to the Island? Can we use our tents there?

  2. Hi Chyne,

I don’t the know the exact amount. However, you can take a bus from Cebu City to Bato, Oslob. You could ask the driver or conductor that you are going to Sumilon Island. At Bato, Oslob, the Sumilon management has an office where you can ask the fare. As to the tent, you can inquire from the Sumilon management at Bato.

Hi I visited your Island last year,It was my mom’s Bday sept.16.Actually we just rented a ferryboat from Dumaguete and Just have our picnic on the sandbar.we were very much enchanted by Sumilon and plan to visit there again this September. However,I’ve just received reports from Boat owner’s that sumilon now charge 200.00 pesos/head just by having a picnic there. Lastyear we were charge 10.00/head by the local gov’t of Santander, which is just fine. But 200.00 is so steep a price. Is it true?
How much exactly is the charge now?
Thanks and I really need your repky asap coz todat is Aug. 31, and we plan to visit there again on September 10. Thank you very much.

  24. hi..im wondering how much are your rates for the overnight stay in the island..do u still have packages?there’s really a long ASEAN Summit Holiday next month from dec. 11-14…so i was wondering about the rates?tnx so much…

  25. I was there early nov 2006…The places was amazing…
They have a day tour package of Php1k… thats per head…
    Inclusive of lunch…
If you wanna stay overnight its $150.00 for 2 persons and $30 per additional person

  26. we went there 2nd week of november ‘06. being a tourist from manila, sumilon was a refreshing break from the usual hectic city noise. Noel, the manager, was one of the nicest people we’ve met in our whole cebu-bohol tour.

bafo- yes I think they give the locals some discount but Im not sure how much…
irish- yep its a nice place for a honeymoon…I dont think they have a package inclusive of the air fare…what you could do is travel from manila to dumaguete have them arrange for a pickup and a pumpboat ride from dumaguete to the island…this wont be the cheapest way to do it but thats the most convenient I know…or you could take the 3-4 hour bus ride from the city to oslob, you could also rent a van from the ‘ciudad’…make sure youve made reservations…they have a 9am and 11am boat ride schedule from the mainland to the island…
ealhz – thats 1k day tour…you have to be in oslob around 7am or 9am to have a day tour…thats Php1k per head inclusive of lunch and boat ride to and from the island. If you got there early you could stay in sumilon for approximately 8hrs:)

  35. Hi! My 2 friends and I are planning to visit sumilon island this sep 22. i’d like to ask if we can just bring our own tent and foods cuz (i think) the hotel accomodation is too expensive. is this possible?

  36. hi…

we are planning to stay 2 nights and 3 days in sumilon.any help to make this possible?

  37. hello everyone!

i just want to correct something to avoid confusion for those who are planning to visit Sumilon Island soon.

the exact place where the office located and where you are to take a boat ride to the island from the mainland Cebu is BANGCOGON, OSLOB not Bato, Oslob. Bato is already part of Santander and definitely no boat there that will take you to Sumilon Island.

BATO via OSLOB is the right BUS ROUTE you will be taking from Cebu City to Bangcogon.

    hope it helps.

  38. its already 2009 guys…day trip already cost 1200/person on weekdays and 1500/person on weekends and 7500 for their standard room…

  39. Its really a great island getaway. i’ll visit this island soon.

  40. hi all,

I just want to ask if the island offers overnight stay? and how much is the rate. thanks.

  41. hi all!

my friends and family are planning to experience Sumilon island in 5th of july. there are 20 of us total and just want to know if we can go there even without staying at the expensive Bluewater Resort? Do they have like huts or cottages that we can rent for a day of use? and how much do the boat charge per person from bangcogon, oslob to the island?
